CFP: Epistemological perspectives on cartography: What is a map?

Dear All:

Nicolas Verdier sent me a CFP for his special issue of International Journal of Cartography with the request that I help push it out to a wider audience. The special issue will address the core epistemological issue for map studies, “what is a map?”

I am especially pleased that Nicolas anticipates substantial essays, up to 15,000 words … people will be able to sink their teeth into the topic!

You can find the CFP at

I’ll be submitting something (how could I not?) and I hope some of you will!

Enjoy!

My blog roll image is of an image that Harley (1988) specifically identified as the kind of work that needs to be studied as a map deployed to satirical effect.

“Partition of Poland,” in Sutherland Edwards, The Polish Captivity (London: W. H. Allen, 1863), 1: frontispiece, after Jean-Michel Moreau’s original drawing, “Le gâteau de roi” (1773), imagining the map of Poland-Lithuania being torn apart by the monarchs of Russia, Prussia, and Austria. Lithograph, 14.5 × 11cm (outer neatline). Courtesy of the Biblioteka Narodowa, Warsaw; online at polona.pl.
