Glossary of Terms in Map History
The work of an individual who seeks to externalize their internal, cognitive map. In other words, a freehand drawing. By extension, sketch [map] can refer to any map that fails to meet basic conventions of consistent scale, etc., although this usage has derogatory implications.
The material on (or in) which a map image is created or reproduced. Historically, these materials include papyrus, vellum, paper, various films, walls, stone, digital monitors (CRT, LCD, etc.).
